The Perfect Wife
(La Serva Padrona)
by
Giovanni Battista Pergolesi

This delightful little operetta has been entertaining audiences and getting “mountains of laughs” since 1733.

A 45-minute show in two short acts, The Perfect Wife provides a wonderful anchor for an evening performance. The remainder of the program can include scenes from Broadway musicals, scenes from operas and/or solo piano music.

Cast:
* Serpina – Soprano (maid)
* Uberto – Bass (master of the house)
* Vespone – Mute (butler)

The Plot:

The entire story takes place in a room in Uberto’s house. When the demands of Serpina (a conceited maid) become too unbearable for Uberto to endure, he begs his butler (the deaf-mute Vespone) to find him a wife. Any woman will do, just so long as he is able to be free of Serpina – who constantly demands that Uberto marry her. But Serpina learns of Uberto’s plan and finds a “husband” of her own, Captain Tempest (Vespone in disguise).

“Captain Tempest” turns out to be a horrible, mean-tempered man. Uberto, shocked that his lovely maid would marry such a person, takes pity on Serpina and, rather than pay the huge dowry Captain Tempest demands, agrees to marry Serpina himself.

His two servants then reveal their trick, but Uberto is not angry for long. He admits that he loves Serpina and managed, in the end, to get what he wanted all along.

Performed in English with either piano accompaniment or a small string orchestra.
