Anthony Olson, piano
This lecture/recital program explores Chinese folksongs and folksong arrangements. With visual aids projected onto a screen onstage, Ms. Peng and Dr. Olson take their audience on a “tour” of China. They share the folk music of the different ethnic tribes that inhabit this vast country. The presentation includes discussion of the traditions and social structure of the different native ethnic groups.
Also examined in the program is the westernization of China that began in the nineteenth century. The 1800s and 1900s was a time of drastic social and political change in China. Western music was introduced during this time, mainly through reforms in the Chinese educational system. Folksong arrangements and original works written by modern Chinese composers are shared in the recital.
This program is an excellent opportunity to bring an exciting cultural presentation to the community.
