DISCOVER THE STORY
The Pulaski Tunnel Trail takes
hikers two miles to the Nicholson mine (AKA Pulaski Tunnel) where "Big
Ed" Pulaski saved most of his 45-man firefighting crew in the Great
Fire
of 1910. This U.S. Forest Service trail, near historic Wallace,
Idaho, follows the West Fork of
Placer Creek up a cool and wooded canyon past waterfalls, cascades, and
richly varied flora.
Pulaski sought refuge for his crew as hurricane force winds whipped up
a fury from hell that is now remembered as "The Big Blowup."
Large-format interpretive signs along the trail tell the story of
Pulaski's heroic leadership and describe the fire's lasting effects on
forest management and wildfire policy and responses even to the present
day.
Both the trail and the mine portal are listed on the National Register
of Historic Places.
